Martin Luther King was a highly well known and at the time very controversial civil rights leader in the United States of America. In 2012, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is on Monday, January 17, 2012 and is a recognized Federal holiday. MLK Day is always held on the third Monday of January.

MLK day is a celebration and remberance of all that MLK fought for during his life and for the ideals he died for through his death. Martin Luther King fought for equality of races and believed that one should be judged on their contributions, ability, and ethics rather than on the color of ones skin. Because MLK grew up and preached in a very contentious time concerning race, the reactions to his thoughts and ideas were very mixed and lead to disagreements and even violence
